The
first step in deciding what to do next is to review what has already happened. Whether
working alone or with your Coach this will entail answering a series of questions.
1. Is the silence following an initial attempt to make contact or has there been some history of
contact already established?
2. Can you absolutely know that your last communication was received by the intended recipient? Remember letters do get lost, email does get deleted by mistake and phone messages
are often not delivered.
3. How long have you been waiting for a response? Understandably
time seems to slow to a crawl while you are waiting for a reaction to your last communication.
Regardless, it is necessary to remember that not everything in life is instantaneous.
4. How committed are you to making sure that some communication is established? Your emotional security
may be tested as you confront increasing feelings of vulnerability as you reach out again and again.
5. How are you dealing with the wait? While your reaction may seem completely out of your control,
it is not. Being able to find a sense of balance in the midst of a situation
which you cannot completely control is essential to your emotional and psychological health.
By
confronting these basic questions and their logically following subquestions with your Coach a path will emerge out of the
fog of confusion. Once your options are visible to you then making your choice
about whether, and/or when to proceed becomes as straightforward as putting one foot infront of the other.
