When
a triad or other affected family member is entering the realm of an adoption search or reunion they quickly confront intense
feelings of isolation. It is important to understand that regardless of how strong
the feelings may be, there are other people sharing the same experience.
The
easiest way to immediately soften the feeling of isolation is to find people sharing a similar experience. In many areas support groups meet monthly or weekly. If a
group is not convenient, there are numerous online sites through which a sense of community can be found.
Books
offer a more private and sometimes very indepth view into the adoption search and reunion experience. There are numerous very well written books available (click here to see my book list) through which people who have walked through the experience share themselves. By immersing yourself in their story at your own pace you may be able to
recognize some of your issues.
Your
Coach can also help you navigate through the maze of beliefs that you have spent a lifetime building. Those beliefs shape your perspective of your situation and provide the foundation upon which you are assigning
meaning to the events in your life. Having a coach can help you realign your
perspectives, beliefs, thoughts and feelings in a more self directed, pro-active and healthy way.
While
not everyone’s lives have been touched by adoption, there are millions of people who have shared similar experiences. Allowing yourself the gift of connection through books, support networks and
coaching is a healthy way to deepen your understanding about your very personal journey.
