What is Inquiry?
Inquiry is a simple, but profound and deeply transformative, self discovery process that can help you access your own
knowing. The process I will teach you is called ‘The Work’ by its founder, Byron Katie. The Work is merely four questions and a turnaround which are applied to one stressful
thought at a time. As you allow your answers to surface, a space will open within
you. Within this space it is possible to recognize your myths about reality and
the role your own story plays in supporting those myths. As your story’s
attachment lessens you will touch peace, compassion and a deep understanding of your true nature.
Inquiry is a tool that allows you to examine your thoughts, recognize new possibilities
and touch new perspectives. This examination is non judgemental and can be a
form of contemplative meditation, opening you to new ways of viewing life.
“I
don’t let go of concepts – I question them. Then they let go of me.”
~Byron Katie
Although the effects can be life
altering, the process you will learn is so simple that even very small children can do it.
The first part of the process is to identify a stressful thought. For
many people filling out a worksheet is helpful. Byron Katie has developed a “Judge
Your Neighbor” worksheet which you can download from Katie’s worksheet here.

Some of the thoughts related to adoption that can be explored with The
Work are:
I shouldn’t have been put up for adoption.
My parents made me relinquish my child.
Being put up for adoption means I am unlovable.
People think I am horrible for giving my child up for adoption.
Finding my birthparents will hurt my adoptive parents.
My raised children won't accept my birthchild.
Society doesn’t want me to learn about my roots.
My family and friends won't understand.
The person I found isn’t responding the right way.
I can’t deal with these overwhelming emotions.

Once a stressful thought has been identified, it can be taken to Inquiry with the four questions
and a turnaround. The questions are:
- Is it true?
- Can you absolutely know that it’s
true?
- How do you react when you think
that thought?
- Who would you be without that thought?
And then turn the thought around.
|
When you put a stressful thought up against these questions and sit quietly, waiting for the answers
to come from within you, new perspectives will become apparent. The revelations
that will find you can lead to new understandings which will spawn new actions yielding new results. Through the simple process of Inquiry your life will radically change.
“The
Work always brings us back to who we really are. Each belief investigated to
the point of understanding allows the next belief to surface. You undo that one. Then you undo the next, and the next. And
then you find that you are actually looking forward to the next belief. At some
point, you may notice that you’re meeting every thought, feeling, person and situation as a friend. Until eventually you are looking for a problem. Until, finally,
you notice that you haven’t had one in years.” ~ Byron Katie
